Lessons in Writing

Bringing together, her experience of being a writer and an editor, Namrata shares two important lessons in writing.

In the last ten years that I have been writing regularly, there are lots of instances when I either am given advice on writing or asked for it. Erotica: A rising genre in Indian Literature

In this article, we explore the rise and growth of erotica as a genre in Indian Literature

Being hailed as the birthplace of the Kama Sutra our country has been very conventional in a lot of things. We have something known as the censor board which decides the kind of movies we can watch. We also have a lot of well-wishers who protect the youth from the Western influences of celebrating Valentine’s Day and talking about sex is a huge NO!

Exploring one’s sexuality has been acceptable since times unknown. Going back to as old as the 16th century we have had authors write stories that spoke about varied sexual preferences. And yet today, when someone says “Let’s talk about sex!” in a room full of people there are only two immediate reactions after the initial oohs and aahs– either it is going to be a discussion that revolves around health or it is going to be a conversation that could have been avoided.

Amidst all this, in recent times the new-age authors who have explored erotica as a genre seem like a breath of fresh air. They are venturing into a territory that was ours long back but had got lost somewhere in between. Through their words, they are trying to reclaim it.

Monday Microscope: Decoding Publishing- Part 1

Namrata shares insights about the publishing options available for a writer today in India and why the story still remains the heart of any book.

I began blogging sometime in 2011 when the literary industry in India was at its peak. The blogging which began more as a love for the written word soon gave birth to my second blog which was a pure reviewing blog. Having been a voracious reader since the age of four, reviewing came naturally to me as I was able to see through the plots of the books I read.

In 2013, I began working as an editor and that is when I finally witnessed the before and after of a book. Till then holding a book in my hands had a very different meaning while now I could see the hard work that went behind each book and that too from different people – beginning with the author and ending up with the publisher’s marketing department.

I will take you through the journey of getting published as a writer sharing the rights and the wrongs that are commonly (mis)understood by many. Beginning with querying till the book is published and it’s time to market the book, the five steps in this journey are what we will decipher at length.

  1. The Journey of Querying
  2. Traditional Publishing V/s Self-Publishing
  3. Make some noise
  4. The Better Option
  5. M for Marketing. M for Money
  6. In short
