“A phenomenon.” — Entertainment Weekly
“The next big thing in literature and film.” — Ebony magazine
Children of Blood and Bone by 24-year-old author Tomi Adeyemi has exploded into a global phenomenon. Entertainment Weekly called Adeyemi “the new J.K. Rowling” and readers and critics alike are calling this fantasy novel inspired by both West Africa and the American black experience ground-breaking, relevant, and impossible to put down. The second book in this series, Children of Virtue and Vengeance, will be on sale December 3, 2019.
The series follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman on a quest to return the magic that was stolen from her people by an oppressive ruling class, while learning to embrace her own magic in an epic adventure set in a world that is both richly fantastical and uncannily reflective of our own society.
Adeyemi is a Nigerian American writer and creative writing coach based in San Diego. She graduated from Harvard before receiving a fellowship to study West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil where she discovered Orïsha—deities belonging to the Yoruban people of southwest Nigeria—which became the inspiration for her breakout series, which has spent more than 80 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.
The series will continue December 3, 2019 with Children of Virtue and Vengeance. In this next installment, Zélie has finally succeeded in returning magic to the land of Orïsha, but the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too. Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart.
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, acquired Adeyemi’s debut series in March 2017 in a seven-figure pre-empt that constitutes one of the biggest debut young adult publishing deals of all time. The series is currently in development for feature film by Disney’s Fox/Lucasfilm.
