As the festival coordinator for Ananke WLF 2024, our founder Namrata gave the closing speech towards the end of the 3-day litfest celebrating inclusivity and diversity.

Excerpts from the speech:

As we draw the curtains on Ananke’s Women in Literature Festival, I find myself enveloped in a profound sense of gratitude and inspiration. These past few days have been a testament to the transformative power of literature and storytelling in uplifting and empowering writers from the global south.

In our fourth edition this year, we were honoured to host a diverse array of voices, including authors, historians, illustrators, graphic designers, architects, journalists, literary critics, translators, thinkers, and thought leaders from more than 9 countries. Each participant brought a unique perspective to the table, enriching our discussions and widening our collective understanding of literature and storytelling.

This year, we were privileged to host a series of powerful and thought-provoking conversations that delved deep into the heart of literature and storytelling. From insightful discussions on identity and representation to intense explorations of language and erasure, our conversations were both illuminating and inspiring. We are grateful to everyone who participated and shared their wisdom, passion, and creativity with us.

Given the current global landscape, this year’s theme, “Language and Erasure,” felt particularly pertinent. Poets courageously bared their hearts and souls, inviting us to reflect deeply on the power of language and its potential for both connection and erasure. Their readings moved us, challenged us, and reminded us of the importance of preserving diverse voices and narratives.

As authors and thinkers shared their deepest thoughts and experiences, the conversations felt raw and intimate, allowing us to glimpse into the complexities of the human experience. Their willingness to open up and share so honestly enriched our discussions, making them truly impactful and thought-provoking.

To all our esteemed panelists, speakers, and cherished audience members, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Your unwavering passion, profound insights, and boundless creativity have imbued this festival with an unparalleled spirit of camaraderie and celebration.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to the festival director, Sabin Muzaffar, for inviting me to be a part of this brilliant initiative this year. It has been sheer joy working with her, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and unlearn together.

Throughout our journey together, we have embarked on a profound exploration of the myriad facets of literature. We have delved into the importance of diverse voices, dissected the impact of language on our perceptions and experiences, and confronted the prevailing narratives of erasure that pervade our literary landscape. We have celebrated the kaleidoscope of human experiences that weave the fabric of our collective narrative.

As we bid adieu to this chapter of the festival, I urge each of you to carry the ethos of Ananke forward with you. Let us continue to amplify the voices of the marginalized, challenge the structures of oppression, and strive towards a more inclusive and equitable literary community.

I would like to leave you with a thought –

In a world where the voices of the marginalized are often silenced, literature becomes a powerful tool for amplifying those voices, challenging injustice, and fostering empathy and understanding.

We hope to see you all next year again, ready to embark on another literary adventure filled with intriguing authors, engaging conversations, and thought-provoking discussions. Stay tuned for a new theme and the same old us, dedicated to celebrating diverse voices and exploring the power of storytelling.

Thank you, once again, for your unwavering support and participation.

Remember- Together, we possess the power to shape a future where every voice is heard, and every story is valued.
