Ananke announces Festival of Literature 2025 and shares the theme as Truth to Power.

Introduction

The 2025 Edition of Ananke’s Festival of Literature (AnankeWLF) arrives at a time when the world is yet again facing an onslaught on free speech and freedom of expression that fights against the tyranny of censorship, neo-colonial regimes of oppression, cantankerous clamor of information and systemic indoctrination. Moving past the time of looking back, taking stalk and reflecting, this is the moment of subversive discourse and speaking truth to power.

It is an unprecedented moment, yet it is also history repeating itself over and over again. In this multipolar world, the powers that be and their conniving cronies proclaim free speech as a form of sedition; all the while engineering new concoctions of persecution to preempt, prevent and protect the system.

Juxtaposed are acts of subversion sweeping across universities, cities big and small; riling up the status quo, shaking the system.

In the fifth edition of the festival, conversations will focus on the manufacturing and production of truth and its relationship with the hegemony of socio-economic, cultural and political structures, apparatuses as well as consciousness. The phenomena of power and that of voice in post-modern, neo-colonial, and digital dystopian times, wielded, leveraged and embodied in politico-economic and social structures and ensembles but also by the sub-altern and the zeitgeist of our present time.

Special attention will be given to discussions on how literature is a vocal manifestation of eras and ages; past and present; influencing narratives, challenging the status quo; preserving our linguistic heritage through snapshots of cultural geographies and thereby shaping our humanity.

Festival Scope

In a world where the lines between fact and fiction blur and the voices of dissent often face suppression, the act of speaking truth to power becomes both a necessity and a form of courage. This year’s festival theme, Truth to Power, invites us to explore the transformative power of words and ideas in challenging injustice, questioning authority, and shaping more equitable futures.

Through literature, debate, and storytelling, we aim to celebrate those who dare to confront the status quo and illuminate the path to truth—be it journalists risking their lives to report on corruption, artists facing persecution for challenging societal norms, or activists using their voices to demand justice.

The festival will bring together an extraordinary assembly of writers, thinkers, activists, and artists whose work embodies the spirit of speaking truth to power. Through panel discussions, keynote addresses, workshops, and performances, we will delve into the myriad ways literature and art serve as acts of resistance and tools for change.

Whether through the sharp clarity of investigative journalism, the nuanced storytelling of fiction, or the boldness of spoken word, our sessions will seek to amplify voices that challenge, provoke, and inspire.

Agenda

Truth to Power is not just a theme—it’s a call to reflection and action. At a time when misinformation proliferates and authoritarianism gains ground, with journalists facing censorship and freedom of speech increasingly under threat, we ask: What role do writers and artists play in holding power to account? How can storytelling bear witness to oppression and awaken collective conscience?

This year’s festival invites you to engage in these vital conversations, to listen and be heard, and to reaffirm the power of truth in shaping a just and compassionate society.

Join us as we celebrate the fearless pursuit of truth and the enduring strength of words.

Together, let’s imagine a world where speaking out is an act of hope and where every story told becomes a step toward justice.
